CICATRICE
New Eyes and Brave

“She died screaming! Just as you’re going to die screaming, if you don’t tell me where he is!”

Jamie Stevens and Mel Lal were best friends at Melbourne’s Parkville University. More than that, they were family. But in October of 2008, something changed. Mel became anxious, secretive and distant. And then Jamie’s life was turned upside down when Mel Lal disappeared.

Five years later, Mel resurfaces. She’s been subjected to a cruelty and a brutality that Jamie could not imagine, and Mel’s only wish upon stumbling into Jamie again – as has been her desire from the beginning – is to protect Jamie from him.

But after her years of sacrifice – staying one step ahead of a madman – Mel’s efforts to shield the woman she cares so deeply about, are about to come to naught.

About Jo Boyle

"She jumped to her feet and ran to the bathroom;

Slammed the door against a world not meant for her."

If I never write another book; if I never dabble again in a world full of artists that shame me with their talent; if I never feel again such heartache and joy; I will still always be grateful for Cicatrice. And I will always be grateful for the two women inside of it, who've done the impossible: they've made me believe.

CICATRICE: NEW EYES AND BRAVE is Jo Boyle's debut novel. She was born in Melbourne to working class parents, and has spent her entire adult life in the idyllic 'Apple Isle' state of Tasmania. She is currently plugging away at an anthology she aims to release mid 2024.

Excerpts

"Mel, who are you afraid of?"

"If, by afraid, you mean which men do I think are capable of a desire to physically harm me, then I have to say all of them."

“The secrets we keep from loved ones aren't often kept to protect anyone other than ourselves. And more often than not, they don't."

“Jamie is in danger now because of you! And she has nothing to do with this! I’m not going to let her suffer because of the monstrous, fucked-up thing you did!”
